Chinese New Year hails this year and that means lots of eating, feasting, nibbling, chewing and all things good to eat. Like everyone else, I have been busy preparing for the festivities, hence the non-existing postings…but now that it has slowed down a bit, I thought I’d showcase what we had for that whole week of CNY.
I was ‘expected’ to cook for the reunion dinner this year. We did not make a trip back to my hometown seeing I just had a newborn but hubster was looking forward to his fish maw soup so I decided to cook for reunion….much to my throbbing temples because that means I am alone in doing the shopping, prep, cooking and washing. Ugh…..how ‘sien’. But seeing how I missed getting into Christmas last year, doing some CNY cooking might set me into the mood. I planned for a simple spread at first but generous people have blessed us with gifts such as a can of good abalone and a box of shitakes so I changed plans and came up with more ‘ho liau’ (great eats) dishes. 🙂
Here is the main spread….
The prep and cooking; vegetables steaming away, when cooking for CNY,
all stove tops are full, table full of ingredients, common sight during CNY…
Fish maw soup, recipe here….
Steamed broccoli with abalone and mushrooms….
Sweet and sour pork ribs and century eggs….
CNY with Foochows means ang chiu mee suah is a must! Recipe here…..
A favoured dessert during CNY…ice cold longan and pineapple in syrup…
Kids being kids….my bubs getting her ‘pay’… 😛
Celebrating CNY with Japanese home cooked food at a friend’s house.
Must have nibbles; nian gou covered with roast peanuts,
my new favourite way of eating nian gou!
Few days after that, it was baked rice seeing as I didn’t cook
rice for the reunion dinner. Recipe here….
After all that heavy duty consumption, it was time to wind down with
simple pot stickers. Recipe here. I actually made this using that quirky gadget,
it’s not as pretty as if you fold it manually but it does make the work faster….
After all that Asian dishes, time to go Western a bit with chicken parmigiana paired with homemade marinara sauce and steamed broccoli.
I know it’s late but here’s wishing all of you who are celebrating Happy Chinese New Year!!
Gong Xi Fai Cai. Thanks for the recipe for Red Wine Mee Suah- was thinking of cooking this! Happy Feasting!
Everything looks so delectable, well done! I like the cheese baked rice hehe and the chicken Parma!
Thanks kelly! Honestly, the chicken parma was my fav too, not all the other chinese dishes. hahaha!
I would like to try the fish maw soup… looks unique 🙂
it is unique to the sitiawan folks yen, although the prep might be a bit lengthy, the cooking only takes a while. 🙂
