I saw this recipe in Nigella’s Express. Actually I was more interested in the bean mash than the steak. I like the idea of a mash potato substitute because God knows it takes some effort to make it. If you wanted a quick side, I’d say this really works.
I would call this dish a bit self-indulging. Sometimes when you’re alone and you want to treat yourself but prefer to do without the hassle, make this. The minute steak or (mai-nute steak) really just takes under a minute to cook. Don’t cook it too long like you would for normal steak or it will get really tough. If I was really being self-indulgent, I would open a bottle of red wine and pour myself a glass, eating this steak while watching Glee. 🙂
Like in the video, I used cannellini beans (pic below), it really taste like baked beans except that it’s bland and white. You have to season these beans well because they lack flavour. Hence adding the garlic helps intensify the taste.
MINUTE STEAK AND GARLIC BEAN MASH RECIPE
Adapted from Nigella Express
A slab of minute steak, room temperature
A can of Cannellini beans
2 cloves garlic
1. Get you grill pan hot. Season your steak with salt and pepper and rub a bit of oil all over it. Cook it on the grill, 30 seconds on side and 10 seconds on the other. While the meat is cooking, add a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce.
2. Let your meat rest. Squeeze some lemon juice into the pan to get the drippings out. Drain your cannellini beans and rinse them. Heat a pan with olive oil, grate in your garlic and toss in the beans. Season with salt and pepper. Mash them with a fork or the cooking spoon you’re using.
3. Plate everything. Drizzle some olive oil over your bean mash and spoon the lemon meat gravy over your steak. Dress your rocket with some olive oil, pepper and lemon juice. Plate.
Enjoy by a candlelight or in front of your favourite show!
