Pantry 101 – Glutinous Rice vs Normal Rice

Glutinous Rice (above)

Glutinous rice unlike its name does not contain gluten, hence it is safe for gluten-free diets. Glutinous rice is also known for its many generic names like sticky rice, pearl rice, pulut, mochi rice etc. But be warned that among the different kinds of sticky rice, its taste and cooking methods vary but they all have one sure similarity that is when cooked, the rice feels ‘stuck’ each grain, hence….sticky rice.

Normal Rice (above)

Can you see the difference? Here they are together (below);

Top; Normal rice, Bottom; Glutinous rice

Glutinous rice can be used to make dishes like thai sticky rice and mango, loh mai kai or even ketupat. Different cultures will have its own unique usage for this ingredient.

Spot which is which…..
